National
seminar “New Stage of Co-operation between Russia and UNEP Infoterra”
The
Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, Russian
Federal Environmental Information Agency (REFIA) and ICSTI under
the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme and Infoterra
– UNEP global network for exchange of environmental information
organized a seminar on access to environmental information that
is to take place in Moscow, during 7-8 December 2000.
The
main objective of the seminar was to elaborate and discuss the
basic principles for an environmental information consortium in
Russia and the establishment of a national integrated environmental
information service. The seminar also aimed to achieve the following:
- to identify
major providers and suppliers of environmental information in
Russia,
- to discuss
current problems hampering access to and dissemination of environmental
information in Russia, including issues of developing appropriate
national legislation framework,
- to analyze
international experience in organizing national environmental
information centres and services, as well as opportunities for
multilateral international projects in this field.
Among
invited participants were Russian government agencies, academic
and scientific institutes, the business community and NGOs, who
can be considered either as major environmental information providers/users
or organizations representing interests of major user groups.
Experts from international organizations involved in environmental
information programmes, as well as managers of national environmental
information centres/services from European countries participated
in the seminar as well.
