Enclosure
In October
2000 in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) AzRISTI presented the "Environmental
Index on the Holy Koran" in six languages at the 1st International
Forum for the Environment from an Islamic Perspective.
Our work received praise from key people in the UN, as well as
experts and organizers of the Forum. Texts of these reviews are
given below.
Dr. Klaus Toepfer
United Nations Under-Secretary-General, UNEP Executive Director:
"Congratulations! A wonderful work, which should be prolongated
in the whole field of spiritual values. I am very proud that UNEP
Infoterra NFP could be a partner in this important matter. Again:
Best wishes for your important work in the future. "
Dr. Mahmoud
Youssef Abdul Rahim
Director,UNEP's Regional Office for West Asia, Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, the Advisory and Scientific Committee member:
"This is an excellent effort in elaborating the environmental
concepts in the Koran. It illuminates the whole approach to the
Universe, matter, and spirit as well as the relations between
man and the environment".
Dr. Nizar
Ibrahim Tawfiq
Chairman of the International Forum, President of the Committee
of Metrology of preservation of the environment of Saudi Arabia:
"We are grateful and appreciate for the effort made in this
document which serves the purpose of Islam and environment".
· The above reviews
inspired further research and AzRISTI is presenting a new project
- "The Holy books. Indexes on environment and sustainable development"
(hereinafter referred to as "the Indexes").
· Behind the main motivation for creating "the Indexes"
had been the attempt to answer important questions raised in the
Holy Books. Everything created by the Creator serves Man - His governor
on Earth, and who can know better about the creations and ways of
using world resources than the Creator himself?
· The Signs (Symbols), sent by the Creator in the Holy Books teach
us how to live and to improve. Our task is to read and decipher
these signs correctly. To read the Holy Books correctly means to
comprehend the Words send down by the Creator in the form of Symbols,
which "work" in accordance with time, place and conditions
of their perception. Such approach had been used during the development
of "the Indexes".
· "The Indexes" should cover all books of the Bible (39
books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament) and
114 Surs of the Holy Koran.
· "The Index" on the environment is systemized in 7 chapters:
the Creator, the Universe, Man, Society, Environment, Nature Management
and Harmony. Our experience shows that such a classification is
user-friendly in perceiving the topics and brings harmonized unity
to the whole material.
· As to the subject of sustainable development, it would be wise
to systemize "the Index" by four basic fields of human
activity: politics (society and law), economics, science and culture".
